SETI -- not able to recognize intelligent life?

For many years, radio telescopes have been scanning the heavens as part of a program known as SETI. SETI stands for the Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence.

They hope that one day they'll stumble across a coded message—or information—from outer space. Then we'll know for sure that there's intelligent life 'out there', because only an intelligent being could have sent such a coded message.

The irony is that SETI enthusiasts are inconsistent in the way they use this criterion. If they swapped their radio telescopes for a molecular biology lab and considered DNA, they'd discover encyclopedic quantities of coded information. Yet if someone suggests this coded information points to an intelligent source, they are dismissed as an idiot.

The SETI program recognizes that only intelligent minds can produce complex coded messages. Why is the DNA information in living things treated differently? Is it because the intelligence responsible must be the Creator-God of the Bible?

Now that we know planets are common in our galaxy, how would we tell if one holds life? Sure, it will take incredibly powerful telescopes and ambitious new space missions, but what are we looking for? What are we listening for? How do we help other worlds know that we are here?

Here's the thing: Life on Earth has an expiration date. No matter what humans do, our aging sun will eventually be so hot that we can't survive. If we want to live on, it will have to be beyond Earth. The only question is, will it be US who live on, or just our radio broadcasts and dead satellites?

NOTE FROM TED: We've flagged this talk, which was filmed at a TEDx event, because it appears to fall outside TEDx's curatorial guidelines. The sweeping claims and assertions made in this talk are based on the speaker’s own theory and lack legitimate scientific support. TEDx events are independently organized by volunteers. The guidelines we give TEDx organizers are described in more detail here: http://storage.ted.com/tedx/manuals/tedx_content_guidelines.pdf

The origin of intelligent life on earth requires a host of statistically improbable events which may imply that similar intelligent life elsewhere is extremely unlikely, a fact mostly ignored in discussions about contacting extraterrestrial life.

“Marc Defant is a professor of geochemistry at USF and studies volcanoes through various funding such as the NSF and National Geographic. He has published research in Nature and other journals and has written a book on the history of the universe, earth and life. He was the keynote speaker at a conference on granitic rocks in China and was one of the first American scientists to work on volcanoes in Kamchatka when it was part of the Soviet Union. He is currently focused on emphasizing the importance of science in society.”

For untold centuries, people have looked to the distant skies in search of life -- be it God-like or heavenly, demonic or the whole gamut of bizarre extraterrestrials imagined. Today, for the first time in human history, science is getting close to answering the eternal question of what lies beyond, and the science is generally pointing in one direction That life is most likely a commonplace in the universe. Discoveries about the census and makeup of exoplanets, about the vast array of long-hidden extremophiles alive here in brutal environments that seem more extraterrestrial than Earthly, the presence of potentially biologically-produced methane on a Mars now known to have once been wet and warm, and the presence of complex carbon and other elements and compounds needed for life as we know it across the universe -- these discoveries and more have the field of astrobiology abuzz. No one factor makes the case that life exists, or once existed beyond Earth, but together they are making an ever-stronger case for extraterrestrial life. And if life exists elsewhere, what's to say it hasn't evolved into complex and intelligent beings?

How Alien Life Will Be DiscoveredHow Alien Life Will Be Discovered
How Alien Life Will Be Discovered
V101 Science 📤 3 years ago 2015-07-20
Looking up at the night sky, it's hard not to wonder how many stars might be home to Earth like planets that host intelligent life, intelligent life that may even be starring right back at us. Thanks to NASA's space telescope Kepler, we do at least have rough estimates as to how many Earth like, rocky planets there are in The Milky Way Galaxy that orbit in the habitable zone of another star. Around one in five Sun like stars have an Earth sized planet in the habitable zone. Assuming around 200 billion stars are in The Milky Way Galaxy, that would be 40 billion potentially habitable planets in our galaxy alone. If billions of potentially water laden, Earth size planets exist in our galaxy, then surely the odds suggest life is out there? So we know Earth sized rocky planets, in the habitable zone, are common throughout the galaxy, and we also know how to locate them, but outer space is massive, so big in fact that even Alpha Centauri, the closest star system to our Solar System is 4.37 light-years away (more than 25.6 trillion miles) So far away that sending a manned mission or probe there would not be possible in our lifetimes, unless alternate propulsion methods are discovered. So with that in mind, why are many of the worlds leading scientists confidently making the prediction "We will discover alien life within the next 10 - 40 years" The possibility of finding alien life in our solar system is still very plausible and the sixth-largest of Saturn's moons may be the perfect place for that discovery. Enceladus has a subsurface ocean underneath it's icy crust and has gained a lot of attention in the search for life beyond earth, this due to its erupting water geysers which are believed to be an indication of hot springs under its frozen surface. Another candidate, Mars, is believed to have once been home to vast amounts of water, Some of which is still present in the form of ice and a small amount of vapor in it's atmosphere. Microbial life could yet be found on mars, however... Alien life found in our solar system would likely turn out to be a lot less alien than you might think. Microbial life from earth would have almost certainly been blasted around the solar system by asteroid and comet impacts, transporting microorganisms protected deep inside rocks on a harsh journey through space. Or life here on Earth could in fact turn out be Martian, as we know life existed here around the same time Mars is believed to have been a much warmer and wetter place. Answers to mans undying question "Are we alone in the universe" will come as we widen our gaze beyond our solar system. Nasa's James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) is due to be launched in 2018, one of it's main uses will be to study the atmospheres of exoplanets, with the potential to follow up on and provide a more in depth look at some of the TESS missions most promising discoveries. The JWST and future larger space telescopes will be able to detect a strong enough signal from close by exoplanets to detect greenhouse gases present in their atmospheres. These detections are made using spectroscopy. When starlight passes through an planets atmosphere, the chemical signature of the atmosphere is in printed on the light as dark lines in it's spectrum , these lines precisely indicate what gases are present in the atmosphere.By detecting large quantities of biosignature gases in the atmosphere of an exoplanet, life can be inferred to exist there, one example would be oxygen, our atmosphere has around 21% oxygen in it, without life in the form of plants and photosynthetic bacteria we would have practically none. In one of the many close by stars systems an alien civilization could be looking at earth right now. After analyzing our planets atmosphere, they may have reached the conclusion that the high oxygen levels and water vapor amongst other things, are a clear sign of life on our planet. Perhaps several alien civilizations in the universe have made the discovery of life on earth and the only thing stopping a visit is the lack of technology to get here?

Dr. Seth Shostak (SETI Institute)

A half-century ago, astronomers began trying to "eavesdrop" for radio messages from nearby star systems. Today, SETI (Search for Extra-Terrestrial Intelligence) researchers continue to point their telescopes at individual stars, on the assumption that technically advanced societies will inhabit a watery world like our own. Seth Shostak describes these searches, but then discusses some novel ideas for how we might pursue the hunt for "cosmic company" and why it's possible that we might find evidence of sophisticated intelligence out there within only a few decades. Shostak is Senior Astronomer at the SETI Institute, in Mountain View, California and hosts the syndicated radio show called "Are We Alone?"

Hello (The SETI Song)
by Rhett&Link and Billy Reid

Every mornin, I grab my donut and coffee, and I sit down at my screen
Nothin gets me goin, like the possibility of knowing, there might be
an intelligent extraterrestrial message for me.
Every day is the same, we dont hear anything,
but we like to play sudoku, lately weve been in to Live Action Role Playing Games.
We know its only a matter of time, before we finally find, intelligent life, saying HI!

Hello? (Hello?) Hello!
This the moment weve been waiting for!
Hello! (Hello!) Hello!
I bid you greetings from my distant world!

We may not have long, so while the signals strong...tell us, what is your planet like? well, alright...

have you cured all disease? no.
have you achieved world peace? no.
is your skin pale green? no.
do your spacecraft come with tractor beams? no...?
do you wear shiny clothes? Rarely.
what about long flowing robes? Right now, Im in my boxers. Oh.
well, how many other intergalactic languages do you know?
well, i took French in High School. French?! Can you specify your exact location?

Shape dynamics: a relational view of the Universe - Henrique Gomes (SETI Talks)
SETI Institute 📤 3 years ago 2015-11-23
Shape Dynamics is a new theory of gravity which removes the notion of local relativistic time from the guiding principles of gravity in the universe. It is a very promising approach which has been shown to be equivalent to Einstein's Theory of General Relativity, without being embedded in time. It is inspired by adherence to Mach's Principle, which is violated by Einstein's theory.

Shape Dynamics provides new tools in the quest for a theory that describes quantum gravity.

In the first part of the talk Dr. Gomes will review some of the Machian motivations for shape dynamics and sketch its construction. In the second half, Dr. Gomes will talk about recent developments on black holes in this formulation, and discuss some positive aspects of its ongoing quantization program.

Year by year the evidence for global electric scarring of Mars continues to grow. Bringing the facts to public attention will be among our highest priorities in coming months. Note: all of the Mars imagery involves actual maps from Google Mars.

In Episode 2 Symbols of an Alien Sky: The Lightning Scarred Planet, Mars, David Talbott takes the viewer on an odyssey across the surface of Mars. Exploring feature after feature of the planet, he finds that only electric arcs could produce the observed patterns. The high resolution images reveal massive channels and gouges, great mounds, and crater chains, none finding an explanation in traditional geology but all matching the scars from electric discharge experiments in the laboratory.

As a scientific follow-up to Symbols of an Alien Sky, this documentary provides a definitive answer to the question: was Mars carved from pole to pole by intense interplanetary discharge?

Errata: The volume of Valles Marineris is estimated by the USGS (2002) to be .92 million cubic miles (3.86 million cubic kilometers).

Abstract: Since its launch in 2009, NASA's Kepler Mission has transformed our knowledge of exoplanetary system demographics. Kepler's primary mission goal-- to quantify the occurrence rate of habitable zone Earth-size planets around Sun-like stars-- has a clear connection to astrobiology. However, in addition to its planet-finding capabilities, the Kepler data may also be used to study other questions of astrobiological interest. In this talk, I will discuss my work on two such ongoing projects: the quantification of the stellar flare rate, which influences planetary habitability through its influence on atmospheric photochemistry and escape; and the detection of anomalous stellar variability as a form of signal-agnostic optical SETI. Both of these lines of research employ machine learning techniques, making them applicable to the current and future large datasets that now dominate the astronomical landscape.

Speaker: Joe Polchinsky, Kavli Institute for Particle Physics, UC Santa Barbara

Abstract:

Thought experiments have played an important role in figuring out the laws of physics. For the unification of quantum mechanics and gravity, where the phenomena take place in extreme regimes, they are even more crucial. Hawking's 1976 paper "Breakdown of Predictability in Gravitational Collapse" presented one of the great thought experiments in the history of physics, arguing that black holes destroy information in a way that requires a modification of the laws of quantum mechanics. Skeptics for years failed to poke holes in Hawking's argument, but concluded that if quantum mechanics is to be saved then our understanding of spacetime must break down in a radical way.

Dr. Polchinsky will present some of the history of these ideas, what has already been learned from this puzzle, and the recent `firewall' controversy, which argues that Einstein's theory breaks down radically for an observer falling into a black hole.

Sickle Cell Anemia -- not evidence for evolutionSickle Cell Anemia -- not evidence for evolution
Sickle Cell Anemia -- not evidence for evolution
CMIcreationstation 📤 5 years ago 2013-03-06
In some parts of Africa, it is actually an advantage to have mutated, oddly-shaped red blood cells.

This condition, known as sickle cell anemia, is usually a disadvantage, but, ironically, it can actually help protect someone from malarial infection because a sickled red blood cell is less appetizing for the malaria parasite.

Many people mistakenly view this sort of change as an example of evolution in action—because a mutation in DNA has made people better adapted to their environment.

But if microbes really did turn into mankind—which is what evolution teaches—this would require the addition of new DNA information to turn the relatively simple genome of a microbe into the vastly more complicated one of a person.

In the case of sickle cell anemia, the opposite has happened, because DNA information has been corrupted and lost, not gained, because the crippled blood cells are less able to transport oxygen.

Atacama Large Millimeter Array (ALMA)
Atacama Desert, Chile
23° 1' 9.42" S, 67° 45' 11.44" W
The Atacama Large Millimeter/sub-millimeter Array (ALMA) is an astronomical interferometer of radio telescopes in the Atacama desert of northern Chile. Since a high and dry site is crucial to millimeter wavelength operations, the array has been constructed on the Chajnantor plateau at 5000 metres altitude, near Llano de Chajnantor Observatory and Atacama Pathfinder Experiment. Consisting of 66 12-meter and 7-meter diameter radio telescopes observing at millimeter and sub-millimeter wavelengths, ALMA is expected to provide insight on star birth during the early universe and detailed imaging of local star and planet formation.
ALMA is an international partnership between Europe, the United States, Canada, East Asia and the Republic of Chile. Costing more than a billion US dollars, it is the most expensive ground-based telescope in operation. ALMA began scientific observations in the second half of 2011 and the first images were released to the press on 3 October 2011. The array has been fully operational since March 2013.
Ground breaking ceremony for the Atacama Large Millimeter Array (ALMA)
Scientists and dignitaries from Europe, North America and Chile are breaking ground today on what will be the world's largest, most sensitive radio telescope operating at millimeter wavelengths .
ALMA - the "Atacama Large Millimeter Array" - will be a single instrument composed of 64 high-precision antennas located in the II Region of Chile, in the District of San Pedro de Atacama, at the Chajnantor altiplano, 5,000 metres above sea level. ALMA 's primary function will be to observe and image with unprecedented clarity the enigmatic cold regions of the Universe, which are optically dark, yet shine brightly in the millimetre portion of the electromagnetic spectrum.
ALMA is an international astronomy facility. ALMA is an equal partnership between Europe and North America, in cooperation with the Republic of Chile, and is funded in North America by the U.S. National Science Foundation (NSF) in cooperation with the National Research Council of Canada (NRC), and in Europe by the European Southern Observatory (ESO) and Spain. ALMA construction and operations are led on behalf of North America by the National Radio Astronomy Observatory (NRAO), which is managed by Associated Universities, Inc. (AUI), and on behalf of Europe by ESO.
"ALMA will be a giant leap forward for our studies of this relatively little explored spectral window towards the Universe" , said Dr. Catherine Cesarsky , Director General of ESO. "With ESO leading the European part of this ambitious and forward-looking project, the impact of ALMA will be felt in wide circles on our continent. Together with our partners in North America and Chile, we are all looking forward to the truly outstanding opportunities that will be offered by ALMA , also to young scientists and engineers" .
"The U.S. National Science Foundation joins today with our North American partner, Canada, and with the European Southern Observatory, Spain, and Chile to prepare for a spectacular new instrument, " stated Dr. Rita Colwell , director of the U.S. National Science Foundation. " ALMA will expand our vision of the Universe with "eyes" that pierce the shrouded mantles of space through which light cannot penetrate." On the occasion of this groundbreaking, the ALMA logo was unveiled
ALMA Observatory Atacama Large Millimeter Array
The first successful movement of an ALMA antenna took place at the Operations Support Facility (OSF) on 8 July 2008. The antenna transporter "Lore", one of the two units manufactured by Scheuerle under contract by ESO and delivered recently at the OSF, has been used to move one 12-m antenna from their site erection facility to an external antenna pad for sky testing. 2008 - Source: www.eso.org/gallery
The Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) is an international astronomy project that consists of an astronomical interferometer formed from an array of radio telescopes, located at Llano de Chajnantor Observatory in the Atacama desert in northern Chile. The telescope is expected to revolutionize modern astronomy by providing an insight on star formation in the early universe and imaging local star and planet formation in great detail. With a cost in excess of one billion US dollars, it is the most ambitious ground-based telescope currently under construction.
The telescopes and their receivers are capable of detecting sub-millimeter and millimeter wavelengths. The array will have much higher sensitivity and higher resolution than existing sub-millimeter telescopes such as the single-dish James Clerk Maxwell Telescope or existing interferometer networks such as the Submillimeter Array or the IRAMPlateau de Bure facility.

Many people think that the biblical flood of Noah was abandoned because of the evidence. However, history tells a different story. Modern geological thought owes much to a man named Charles Lyell. Lyell, a lawyer, published a book in 1830 called Principles of Geology. Described as a "masterpiece of persuasion", it changed the way people thought about earth's past. According to Lyell, we should only appeal to today's geological processes to explain earth history. However, this approach meant that the global flood recorded in the Bible was automatically ruled out of consideration. Lyell wanted, he wrote, "to free the science [of geology] from Moses". Regrettably, many people have uncritically adopted Lyell's philosophy, without considering how Noah’s flood can help us understand earth history. Lyell changed the way many people think, but his approach was motivated by his anti-biblical philosophy, not an objective study of the evidence. Indeed, it is very difficult to explain earth's history without Noah's Flood. To find out more from Creation Ministries International visit our website creation.com

DO you believe we are alone in the universe? The term Anunnaki is often used in ancient texts as referring to a group of gods. The name is a derivative of the names heaven and earth, Anu and Ki but is also translated by some as "those of royal blood" and also "princely offspring". Some even believe the Anunnaki are sons and daughters of the gods, heaven and earth.

They are said to have created or come from the Mesopotamian culture. There are others who believe they are a form of extra-terrestrial beings (reptilian or serpent race) from outer space or sometimes more specifically from the planet Nibiru/Planet X that at one time lived on this planet or still do on another plane of existence. More on the details on this later in this article.

Feathered dinosaurs?
CMIcreationstation 📤 5 years ago 2014-01-07
Unless you've been living underground for the last few years, I'm sure you've heard of feathered dinosaurs. It seems we're constantly hearing that birds evolved from dinosaurs, some have even suggested that KFC could change its name to KFD, Kentucky fried dinosaur.

But not all evolutionary scientists accept the dino to bird dogma. A prominent one is renowned ornithologist Alan Feduccia of the University of North Carolina. He recently stated, "The theory that birds are the equivalent of living dinosaurs and that dinosaurs were feathered is so full of holes that the creationists have jumped all over it." He further laments, "With the advent of feathered dinosaurs we are truly witnessing the beginnings of the meltdown of the field of paleontology."

Those looking for evidence that birds evolved from dinosaurs will be disappointed because the creator told us he created birds before land animals, such as dinosaurs.

Upside down geological column
CMIcreationstation 📤 2 years ago 2016-07-05
Did you know that part of the geological column is found upside-down in Pakistan? At the foot of the Karakorum Mountains, in the Salt Range Formation, scientists have discovered fossilized plants and insects. From an evolutionary perspective, these remains belong to the upper part of the geological column. However, this formation lies beneath Cambrian rocks, which are supposedly over 400 million years older. So why are the fossils of more complex life buried below fossils considered much more primitive? This is a vexing evolutionary problem. Discoveries such as these support the biblical version of earth history, whereby the geological column is primarily a consequence of the global flood and its aftermath. It is no surprise that there is some order in the fossil record, such as sea creatures buried beneath land creatures, and mobile creatures such as birds near the top. But, as the Salt Range Formation testifies, the ordered charts that adorn textbooks aren’t necessarily what we find in the field.

Genetic Entropy -- the rapid destruction of the human genome
CMIcreationstation 📤 5 years ago 2014-01-29
Calling someone a mutant is an insult because mutations, which are copying mistakes in DNA, are almost always bad. In fact, we know many mutations by the diseases they cause and, to make matters worse, more mutations are added to the genome every year.
In his recent book Genetic Entropy and the Mystery of the Genome former Cornell University professor Dr John Sanford points out the seriousness of this problem. He shows that mutations are rapidly decaying the information within the human genome.
However, this is surprising because, according to evolutionary theory, mutations coupled with natural selection is the means by which new information arises. But according to Sanford, if mutation and selection cannot preserve the information already in the genome it's difficult to imagine how it created all that information in the first place.
