Radiocarbon found in Diamonds

You've probably heard that, 'diamonds are a girl's best friend', but diamonds also teach us an important lesson about the age of the earth.

Diamonds are made of carbon. One rare type of carbon—known as carbon 14—is radioactive, which means that it breaks down over time. By measuring the amount of decay, scientists estimate how old something is. Some people think that carbon 14 dating proves things happened millions of years ago. But that is wrong, because carbon 14 decays so fast that something a million years old could not contain any carbon 14.

Geophysicist Dr John Baumgardner recently investigated the level of carbon 14 in diamonds. Many would've considered such research pointless, because the diamonds were supposedly over a billion years old, which meant all carbon 14 should've decayed. But the radiocarbon labs detected significant levels of carbon 14, which suggests the diamonds are much younger; only thousands of years.

10. Harzburgite Inclusions
Harzburgite inclusions are a form of peridot-ite rocks, which are the most common rocks in the Earth’s mantle. These inclusions are so common that scientists are able to date diamonds by dating the inclusions inside of them.
At Amsterdam’s Vrije University, scientists have been studying 26 diamonds with Harzburgite inclusions. They’ve determined that nine of these diamonds were formed three billion years ago when the mega continent Pangaea broke apart into smaller continents.

9. Boron Molecules
There are four qualities that determine the value of a diamond but you probably know this already. Cut, color, carat and, everybody say it with me know! Clarity. Good! Carat is the weight of a diamond, and it’s an obvious basis for value. The heavier the diamond, the bigger it is, and therefore usually the more it costs. Color is important because some colors are rarer than others. The two rarest diamond colors are blue and red.

8. Kyanite
Another molecule that turns diamonds blue is kyanite, which is a semiprecious stone in its own right. It’s rare, but sometimes diamonds contain kyanite, which most often turns the diamond blue. Kyanite is used in heat-resistant ceramics and can be found in sinks and bathroom fixtures. It is also used in manufacturing where heat resistance is important.

7. Extra-terrestrial Carbon
Pure carbon exists in three forms: graphite, buckminsterfullerene, and, of course, diamonds. There are two other forms of carbon, as well, and their existence was postulated long before it was proven.
These two other forms are made of mutated carbon atoms, which have the distinction of being harder than diamond.

6. Carbon-12
In 1983, 22 diamonds were found in the Jack Hills in Western Australia. These diamonds were made of carbon-12, also known as light carbon, which is only formed from living organisms. Earth is estimated to be about 4.54 billion years old, and scientists from UCLA just recently shared with the public that they had found biogenic carbon that dates back to 4.1 billion years.

5. Calcium Silicate Perovskite
Calcium silicate perovskite makes up almost 38% of the Earth’s volume, but it’s still incredibly rare to find. The best sample that scientists have obtained came from a meteorite. Here on Earth, it’s the fourth most common substance, but when it gets closer than 400 miles to the surface, it becomes unstable and breaks down. Stable samples of calcium silicate perovskite are hard to obtain because the mineral can only exist deep in the Earth’s mantle, too deep to reach through drilling.

4. Ferropericlase
The Earth’s mantle is extremely thick, and most diamonds are formed in the upper and middle bands. It’s very rare for diamonds to be found that were formed in the deepest levels of the mantle. The Gemological Institute of America (GIA), however, thinks they’ve found some from this superdeep level based on the discovery of diamonds with Ferropericlase.

3. Ringwoodite
Geologists speculate that there’s an ocean trapped inside the Earth’s mantle, 320 miles inside the planet. Or at least a very, very large amount of water that is trapped in a specific layer of the deep Earth. The ocean in question is held within a green mineral called ringwoodite, which only exists in an area between the upper and lower mantle called the transition zone.

2. Ice-VII
There are several different types of ice in the world. The standard ice for us, the kind we put into our drinks, is called ice-I, and its oxygen atoms form hexagons. If ice-I is put under pressure, it converts to ice-II,. More pressure makes ice-III, and so on. So you can imagine Ice-VII!! It is actually created in the laboratory, and scientists believe it is common on icy moons like Titan and Europa. They never believed that it existed naturally on Earth.

1. Liquid Metals
Like water, metals can be caught inside diamonds as they form. These little impurities or inclusions make jewelers discard them diamonds as subpar, but to scientists, these impurities can speak volumes.
Large diamonds containing metal inclusions are rare. There have been 53 diamonds found with these impurities inside them.

How the Universe Works - Planets in Our Solar System and black hole - Space Discovery Documentary
How the Universe Works 📤 1 week ago 2019-02-10
A supermassive black hole (SMBH) is the largest type of black hole, on the order of hundreds of thousands to billions of solar masses (M?), and is found in the center of almost all massive galaxies. In the case of the Milky Way, the SMBH corresponds with the location of Sagittarius A*.

Supermassive black holes have properties that distinguish them from lower-mass classifications. First, the average density of a supermassive black hole (defined as the mass of the black hole divided by the volume within its Schwarzschild radius) can be less than the density of water in the case of some supermassive black holes. This is because the Schwarzschild radius is directly proportional to mass, while density is inversely proportional to the volume. Since the volume of a spherical object (such as the event horizon of a non-rotating black hole) is directly proportional to the cube of the radius, the minimum density of a black hole is inversely proportional to the square of the mass, and thus higher mass black holes have lower average density. In addition, the tidal forces in the vicinity of the event horizon are significantly weaker for massive black holes. As with density, the tidal force on a body at the event horizon is inversely proportional to the square of the mass: a person on the surface of the Earth and one at the event horizon of a 10 million M? black hole experience about the same tidal force between their head and feet. Unlike with stellar mass black holes, one would not experience significant tidal force until very deep into the black hole.

An exoplanet (extrasolar planet) is a planet located outside the Solar System. The first evidence of an exoplanet was noted as early as 1917, but was not recognized as such. However, the first scientific detection of an exoplanet began in 1988. Shortly afterwards, the first confirmed detection came in 1992, with the discovery of several terrestrial-mass planets orbiting the pulsar PSR B1257+12. The first confirmation of an exoplanet orbiting a main-sequence star was made in 1995, when a giant planet was found in a four-day orbit around the nearby star 51 Pegasi. Some exoplanets have been imaged directly by telescopes, but the vast majority have been detected through indirect methods, such as the transit method and the radial-velocity method. As of 1 February 2019, there are 3,976 confirmed planets in 2,971 systems, with 653 systems having more than one planet. This is a list of the most notable discoveries.

Carbon is a critical ingredient for life on Earth. All living things are made up of about 25% carbon. The carbon atom is unique because it can bind to other carbon atoms to form long chains and rings and these in turn serve as the backbone of the complex molecules that make life possible.

The nucleus of a typical carbon atom has 6 protons and 6 neutrons. But about one carbon atom out of every 100 has one extra neutron. This has very little effect on the properties of the carbon, other than making it slightly heavier. Chemically, it acts just like any other carbon atom. It is called Carbon-13.

And there is an even rarer type of carbon. It is formed high in the atmosphere when cosmic rays strike atoms of nitrogen converting them into Carbon -14. Carbon-14 is also chemically identical to regular carbon.

But the nucleus of carbon-14 is unstable. After some amount of time, which could range from a few days to many thousands of years, carbon-14 decays back into nitrogen. But since carbon-14 is formed at a steady rate, there is a constant level of it in the environment. Out of every trillion carbon atoms in your body, only one dozen of them are carbon-14.

As long as an organism is alive and eating, it maintains a constant ratio of carbon-14 to regular carbon. But once an organism dies, the amount of carbon-14 in its body begins to decrease. After 5000 years about half of the original number of carbon-14 atoms will have decayed. Using this fact, scientists can tell how long ago an organism died.

Young earth creationists and Carbon-14 "dating" of diamonds

Young earth creationists are using this "Carbon-14 dating of diamonds" to argue that geologists are all wrong that the earth has been around for millions and billions of years. In this video I discuss the directly relevant science information that the young earth creationists are conveniently ignoring.

(By the way, yes, I misspoke in the video about C14 being produced from C12 in the atmosphere; it's produced from nitrogen atoms, not carbon atoms.)

Here is some relevant reference information (of course, as you'll notice from numerous examples of how young earth creationists behave in the comments sections of my videos, they are apparently incapable of lifting a finger to actually look up and read any real science information; they avoid/evade it like the plague; so this information is just for everyone else):

Cows acting like compassesCows acting like compasses
Cows acting like compasses
CMIcreationstation 📤 3 years ago 2015-08-11
What does a cow have in common with a compass needle? The answer is that both of them ‘know’ the orientation of the earth’s magnetic field.
No, this isn’t crackpot science. In 2008, the prestigious journal, the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences USA, published research documenting how cows grazing in a field have a tendency to align themselves with the earth’s magnetic field.
And this phenomenon isn’t just limited to cows; many animals including deer, birds, turtles, bats, and even some bacteria, can sense the earth’s magnetic field for alignment or navigation.
The fact that so many living things have this ability is rather ironic, considering that the famous evolutionist J.B.S Haldane once said that evolution couldn’t produce magnets.
Just as man-made magnetic compasses are the product of forethought and design, so, too, the magnetic sensing in animals points to an intelligent designer. To find out more from Creation Ministries International visit our website creation.com

How did animals get to distant places after the Flood? How did animals get to distant places after the Flood?
How did animals get to distant places after the Flood?
CMIcreationstation 📤 6 years ago 2013-01-09
Many people have trouble understanding how animals got to distant places around the world after disembarking from Noah's Ark. While it is likely that humans transported some animals on boats, this is not the only explanation available. Somewhat ironically, Richard Dawkins reminds of this when he writes,

"Most islands around the world, even quite remote ones like Ascension Island, have animals. Some of these, for example birds and bats, got there in a way that we can easily understand, without postulating a great deal of luck. But other animals, like lizards, can't fly. We scratch our heads and wonder how they got there. It may seem unsatisfactory to postulate a freak of luck, like a lizard happening to be clinging to a mangrove on the mainland which breaks off and drifts across the sea. Freakish or not, this kind of luck does happen — there are lizards on oceanic islands."
—Richard Dawkins, Climbing Mount Improbable, W. W. Norton & Company, Inc., 1996, pp. 282

Global flood on Mars -- but not on Earth?Global flood on Mars -- but not on Earth?
Global flood on Mars -- but not on Earth?
CMIcreationstation 📤 5 years ago 2014-01-30
In recent years, NASA probes have sent back images of our nearest planet Mars. These images have prompted some scientists to suggest that a global flood once carved the Martian landscape, even though no liquid water has yet been found.

The Bible records and event that certainly sounds like a global flood on Earth. Genesis records that, "All the mountains under the heavens were covered." Jesus himself, referring to those not on Noah's Ark, said, "The flood came and took them all away."

Unlike the illusive water on Mars, water covers 70% of the earth's surface and water deposited sedimentary rock covers much of the land surface. So isn't it strange that many people who are open to the possibility of a global flood on Mars, despite the absence of water, immediately dismiss any suggestion that a global flood occurred on earth.

Recently Bill Nye and Ken Ham had a debate regarding the validity of evolution and creationism. This debate mixed with the recent discovery of the earliest known human footprints outside Africa is leading a big question to arise: How does carbon dating work? Well, Trace did some digging and is here to tell you all about carbon dating and other ways we can know the age of an object or fossil.

Carbon-14 in Coal and Diamonds

If the Earth is billions of years old, then how do you explain that carbon-14 has been found in coal, natural gas and diamonds? No carbon-14 should exist in any carbon supposedly older than 250,000 years. Yet, it has been impossible to find any natural source of carbon that does not contain significant carbon-14. Also, if the Earth is billions of years old, then how do you explain the folded sedimentary layers that we see around the world? These are layers of mud laid down by the Flood only about 4,500 years ago. They were folded, and only then dried up and turned into hard rock.

Cosmology & Astronomy on Khan Academy: The Earth is huge, but it is tiny compared to the Sun (which is super huge). But the Sun is tiny compared to the solar system which is tiny compared to the distance to the next star. Oh, did we mention that there are over 100 billion stars in our galaxy (which is about 100,000 light years in diameter) which is one of hundreds of billions of galaxies in just the observable universe (which might be infinite for all we know). Don't feel small. We find it liberating. Your everyday human stresses are nothing compared to this enormity that we are a part of. Enjoy the fact that we get to be part of this vastness!

About Khan Academy: Khan Academy offers practice exercises, instructional videos, and a personalized learning dashboard that empower learners to study at their own pace in and outside of the classroom.
